Students and Their Music

Here at North Idaho Christian School there are many different kinds of people, and with so many different kinds of people, there comes many different types of music. Music is defined as vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce certain beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion through sound (and lyrics). Music takes on so many different various types of sounds and styles, and a large range of these styles are listened to by students at North Idaho Christian School. Many students identify with music because they find it as a relaxing way to unwind and express their emotions.

I went and decided to interview students to try and figure out what kind of music they like, and to see how this music impacted their lives, if it all. The response I got was as you might expect, all very positive towards music. This can be easily observed through the interviews, where students expressed their feelings and why they liked what they listened to. Aydan Salois had this to say about music, “I like rap/hip-hop for multiple reasons. Mainly because it is quite diverse. Lots of the issues discussed in this genre are relatable and not always light. It agrees with my realist state of mind on some issues. Obviously not all issues are relatable, but the ones that are – give a sense of validation to the listener. Being a more negatively minded individual, having a kind of music that always agrees with me is quite nice. It is oddly empowering to have a person in the limelight that speaks openly about real issues, while also being immensely entertaining.”

Another quote on music, by Lilli Brennan, “I like a lot of different types of music. hip hop and rap, R&B and soul, and alternative are some of my favorite. The reason I like these ones I particular is because most of the songs make you feel things. I like how in these genres, the artist can really express how they are feeling. A lot of songs also have a deeper meaning to them.” Another student, 11th grader Andrew Buffin, shares why he enjoys island reggae, “It provides positive vibes and, overall, a message of kindness and good times.” Pieter Beukelman clearly states his thoughts, “I like classic rock. It sounds good. It makes me very happy. The instruments have a good feel together. I grew up listening to Dire Straits, Bryan Adam’s early stuff, Boston, and stuff like that.”

Music is essential for many students to get through the day, and many shared that they listen to music at least once a day for a feeling of rejuvenation. It can clearly be seen that there are quite a variety of music that is listened to by the students of North Idaho Christian School. However, among all the variety, one thing is for certain – these students love music to express themselves and share how they feel.
