Prom
Every year, North Idaho Christian Seniors put on a prom for anyone of high school age to attend. Yet for some reason, NICS denys to put it on as a school event and does not take any responsibility for it. Why is this one may ask? Students often wonder this themselves and can often not come up with a good explanation.
Prom is something anyone can enjoy going to; the young and old, strong and weak, and anyone in between. Almost every adult can tell you a story from their prom years- whether it be a funny mishap, or the denial of a date. But nonetheless, they all went to prom; and all of them would admit their is nothing wrong with it.
Biblically there is nothing wrong with throwing a prom at all; in fact, the Bible encourages dancing and music. It can be seen as a theme throughout the whole Bible, dating back to the Old Testament. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to not dance with anyone, or to listen to music, or to go have fun at a party. Obviously the intentions behind prom are not to praise God, but neither is practically any other aspect of everyone’s life; not to say that their are not people who do everything for God, but most Christians are living the “Luke Warm” life, which is a problem in itself with today’s church.
So if the school is not going to own up to throwing a prom, then why are teachers and staff members from the school showing up to chaperone and watch over everyone? If the school claims no responsibility in the party, then there is no reason for staff to show up. Either accept that the school is throwing a prom and help out, or do not show up at all. Do not do things half-heartedly.
Prom is going to happen either way, with or without help from staff at the school. The senior class will put it on, as normal, without any help from the school. There will always be the question of why the school does not help out; and the question will never be answered. Seniors will always rent a space from somewhere for a night, sell tickets to pay for the cost of rent, and play some jams for people to dance to. The party will go on.
In conclusion, North Idaho Christian School should put on a prom because either way it is going to get put on, whether it be by students or with help of the school. If the school helped put it on, they could even benefit from it. It could be used as a ministry, as a way to reach out to students who do not attend our school and who are not believers. The school could put that money towards anything they need, which would in turn benefit kids who attend NICS. It would be a win-win for everyone, with no downside. The students would be willing to help set anything up as they do it all already, and with the help of the school, prom could be a very fun place that doubles as a ministry to reach out to others.
