Lunches at NICS

Food. Everyone has it, no matter who you are – it is a human essential. Every student at North Idaho Christian School has some sort of food everyday, and although there is probably a few who do not like eating during the school days, the vast majority bring a lunch or snack to school everyday. One of the most common things eaten, are school lunches. School lunches come in many different size and shapes.

On Monday, North Idaho Christian School kids are able to have pizza as an option for lunch. The options are pepperoni, cheese, Hawaiian, and sausage. Pizza is probably one of the most popular lunches of those served every week. The line is very long on Monday’s, and the school often times gets extra pizza because kids often want to get an extra slice. Pizza is also often served with chips, candy, and drinks, which is often soda or water.

Tuesday’s are run by the seniors of the school. They are a very complicated process, the food consists of tacos from Del Taco, tater tots which are made in the oven at the school, and they also serve sub sandwiches. These subs also come in a combo option, which comes with a sub, chips, a drink, and a slice of what is called ‘friendship bread’, which is a sweet pastry that is covered in sugar. This is also a very popular choice for students because they love the combo deal and that the sandwiches are loaded with cheese and meat, something loved by many students.

On Wednesday’s, Mr. Alden rules the lunchroom with some of his dishes, he has chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, pepper-bellies, nachos, and his signature dish, The Alden, which is essentially nachos with a special chilli on top that students love to get every week. Mr. Alden has been doing this for quite a few years and the students have come to accept it as a very traditional food choice. It will be a sad change for many students throughout the school when he is gone, as many students rely on his tasty meals to get through the week.

Thursdays are run by the juniors, and they always serve grilled cheese, mac n’ cheese, drinks, and often a treat such as cookies, brownies, or rice crispy treats. Thursdays, like Tuesdays, often change every year – as juniors and seniors change yearly, there is a lot of unknown goodness that will be coming to the remainder of the students throughout their high school years.

Hopefully in the upcoming years, students will receive healthier foods than has been made available in previous years. Tuesday’s are probably the most healthy right now, with the subs being a fairly nutritional choice, but the need for healthy food is high. This could probably be done with the incorporation of possibly salads or soups, as they both are pretty healthy and tasty. NICS staff and faculty should definitely take strides to at least make 2 days of the week healthy food, it would be of great benefit to the physical and mental health of all the students at NICS to have healthy, balanced diets.
