It’s been a long road, getting from there to here, as any senior can tell you, but NICS and its students are proud of the graduating class of 2017 for rising up and completing this step in their next journey. Two weeks ago , the seniors completed their senior projects and presentations. Our high schoolers were able to go and see the things the seniors worked so hard to create. It was so fascinating to me to see what kinds of job interests were represented even in a group of just four twelfth graders. Aiden told me, “Take what you need, don’t wait for people to give you something. Ask for help if you need it.”

I asked a few seniors about their first thoughts about finally being a senior, and they had a lot to tell me: “I was excited for what the year held. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe I am almost graduated,” says NICS Student Body President Aleesa McArthur. Rachel Simmons commented, “I made it! I can hardly believe I’m here, but if there was a 13th grade, I would stay. I’ll miss it here.”

This year’s seniors wanted to give a little encouragement to next year’s. “One thing, do the assignments when they tell you to.” Christina Southern said. Rachel added, “Don’t freak out about the Senior Project, it’s not as bad as it seems.” Aleesa agreed. “Don’t get focused on the work, but take time to enjoy the journey, and take time to also reach out to the younger classmen.”

The seniors ran chapel this Thursday, and they left us with some outstanding messages, topics like never giving up, being who you are, encouraging the younger classmen, and forming fellowships with friends because these are the friends you might have for a long time. “Stay strong and don’t give up,” says Keira Holmes. “that’s what I live by.”

This year, the eleven seniors are going to the Oregon coast for their senior trip. When they return, on the last day of school, they will be available to sign yearbooks. On June 10th, NICS is holding a graduation ceremony as we send the twelfth graders on their way to college and into the workforce.

To the 2017 seniors, we wish you luck as you travel the long road to your future, and as you pursue what you have been called to do. We hope you’ll leave a lasting impact on those around you. We will miss you — stop in once in awhile to say hello. I know it really cheers up the lower classmen to know someone cares.
