Summer Reading Program

The summer reading program is for students that want to read for the schools reading goal over the summer. Every quarter of the school year each has student’s read a book and have an interview with the librarian about the books they read. The reading goal each quarter counts as a grade for an English class or other classes if a student doesn’t take any English classes during the school year. The summer reading program allows students to have the option of reading over summer so that they don’t have to read during the school year. This is great for students that want to get ahead or finish their reading goal for the school.

Students can pick up summer reading goal forms at this school’s library towards the end of the school year. The form explains what books are appropriate for students to read and students have to write a one-two page book report on the book or books that they read. They also have to fill out on the form information about the book, their signature, and a parent or a legal guardian’s signature showing that they read the book. Students have to read a biography and a classic first and then they can read other books that they want to read. This is great for students that enjoy reading and also for students that don’t enjoy reading because they can get their reading goals out of the way before the school year starts.

Reading one book even helps students to get a head start for the next school year. Students have to read a minimum of 1200 pages to meet the reading requirements, but seniors only have to read 600 pages so their load of school work isn’t as stressful. It’s easier or more efficient to read books that are around 300 pages each so that students don’t have to read several books to meet the requirement. Students also have to turn their book reports and forms with signed signatures during the summer or on the first day of school to receive credit for reading. It’s important to be organized and to turn the reports in so that students don’t miss out on receiving the credit for their reading and book reports.

Students are encouraged to read over the summer so that they won’t be as stressed during the upcoming school year. Most students are stressed during the school just with their standard homework and having to also read for the reading goal can also add more stress. When student’s read during the summer they don’t have to worry about reading during the school year because they did the work during the summer. If students need more information about the summer reading program, they can ask the school librarian and receive a form that also explains it. Students who do or don’t enjoy reading should think about reading over the summer for their reading goal because it allows them to get a head start or finish their reading goal early.
